When you need to produce something quickly, whether to meet a deadline or solve an emergency, the organization of your files is extremely important. And that's what I'm going to talk about. There are several ways to advance the work so that in the future, when the need arises, we will have tools already prepared and that work according to our own method of creation. There is no right or wrong way, but there are definitely some practices that can help us through the process.
FILES
Having your files organized helps a lot when creating, finding or making changes to your projects. It is very important to save everything correctly and following a logic. For example, a way to better organize the production process is to save the files with their version number and possible changes:Music_guide_1.0Music_edit_1.3Music_mix_2.0
FOLDERS
I save projects to a project folder divided by customer names. And each folder is divided into other folders that hold everything that has to do with each project. When I open a project, whether in Logic, Pro Tools, MPC, Final Cut or another DAW, I've probably already created a folder to store everything related to that project. For samples, I recommend a dedicated folder on an external SSD to make the operating system's work easier and to have the speed of this type of media. They can be organized by packs, instruments, timbres and styles, making them much easier to find.
TEMPLATES
Templates are files that you can prepare in advance and use as a starting point. It's not necessary to open that same reverb every time you start a new job. Get everything ready that you find yourself repeating in different projects. That way, you gain time to focus on more important things. You can organize your Templates as follows:1. Session templates;2. Effects templates;3. Templates by application;4. Folder templates to organize projects;Among other ideas.
PRESETS
Like Templates, Presets are starting points. You can save your most used effects, save your favorite sounds and load them in the middle of your session without having to create everything from scratch. For example, I take a few days to mine samples that I like, that catch my attention, or for a specific project, and I organize it all in a way that I can use quickly.Detail: I'm talking about Presets created by ourselves for our own Workflow. I won't go into detail about whether Factory Presets are good or not. I believe it all depends on the material and the project.
TO SAVE
Saving your files in the right folders, with the right names and in the right place, once you start the project, can help you a lot in the process. Having your favorite instruments ready to use, your tools properly calibrated for your Workflow and ways to save time can help you significantly in the creation process. Save! Save! Save!
BACKUP
Have a copy of your designs in at least two different places. In order not to have to go through the unpleasantness of losing all the work that was developed.
ABSTRACT
I believe these points can help with the organization of your project and help you focus on what matters most, which is the result. And enjoy the process without worrying about searching for that sample, or creating that kit with the parts you always use, or creating that reverb channel that is in all your productions.
